Tonight, Feb. 8 2012, Mercury and Mars will be less than a degree apart. Look for them very low in the WSW just after sunset. You’ll need binoculars or a small telescope. Thy set at about 1.25 hours after sunset, which is about a quarter after 7 in Ann Arbor.

Mercury moves higher in the evening skies over the next week, so keep watching for it.
