What the Dead Know by Robert Polito : The Poetry Foundation January 24, 2013Posted by aquillam in poetry.
Because it is the third week of the year, and I have already bee to two funerals.
And because while I don’t really believe in ghosts, spirits, or immortal souls, but I do believe no one ever truly leaves us. Their faces are visible in the faces of their descendants, their gestures in the gesture of those who grew up around them, and their beliefs and interests continue to influence us years after we have forgotten the source. We cast our nets to trap them, never realizing they are still with us, but quite in the way we would like.
