Cloudy Nights is a forum for astronomy enthusiasts around the  world.  Each year, their readers nominate and vote on what they think is the best gear available.  The 2009 gear of the year is at http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=2393

If you scan down the list most years, you’ll find fancy eyepieces, imagers, and telescopes that can quickly consume a week’s pay or more.   This year is really no different, with 3-figure eyepieces and a ‘scope pushing 5 figures (true, it’s a heavy-duty imaging package, but at that price I ought to be able to drive it to the observing site!)

There is one item on the list however that won’t break anyone’s bank: the Galileoscope. True, the price on the Galileoscope has gone up over the past year (doubled, in fact), but it’s still a bargain at $30 and much better than the $100 department store ‘scopes. And unlike the 100 lb $9,800 ‘scope it shares the list with, you can toss it in your carry-on when you head out on your next trip.
