More things to watch for when buying a telescope December 11, 2009

Someone sent me a craigslist ad for an Orion StarMax 127mm Equatorial Mak-Cass Telescope. They included the list of everything they were including with the telescope, which was pretty much everything Orion would have sent. And it was indeed a nice set-up.

So what’s the problem?

They were asking $750 for it. The price at Orion is $630.

The moral of the story? Check the price of the new equipment before buying something used. Also, check a few other forums to see what used equipment should cost. Astromart is a good one for a variety of astronomical equipment. Just remember with electronics especially that things change rapidly, so comparasons can be very hard.

A quick perusal of craigslist showed several other telescopes for sale.  Many of them did not list and characteristics of the ‘scope, nor did it list what’s included.  A picture may be worth a thousand words, but it won’t tell you if the ‘scope takes 1″ eyepieces.
