Comet Lulin (C/2007 N3) promises to be the first naked eye comet of 2009. Visible now in the early morning hours in the constellation Lyra, it should become a naked eye comet in February.

It will probably not get brighter than a magnitude 5. However, the orbit indicates that this is Lulin’s first trip into the inner solar system. That makes it somewhat unpredictable. If there is a lot of ice near the surface, the comet could brighten dramatically when it sublimates.

Personally, I’m hoping for a great comet for IYA.
