SL Astronomy – David Rumsey Maps November 5, 2008

The David Rumsey Map Colection has put models of some of their maps in SL. Especially interesting are the globes, since the flat images were really designed to fit on a globe (check out the Cassini celestial globe online.)

View of southern hemisphere

Pictured here is a view of the southern hemisphere from inside a globe originally designed by Cassini. Inside each of the globes is an orrery with the 5 visible planets. Visitors can either fly or have a seat in the middle of the globe. Note that since you are *inside* the globe, the sky is reversed (in this view, north is up and things on the left side are to the west)
